Romania’s Cognac-type category, literally “burnt wine” — oak-aged wine distillate made from Romania’s grape varieties. Protected names at European level include Vinars Târnave, Vaslui, Murfatlar, Vrancea and Segarcea, with five vinars designations recognised nationally. Distinct from țuică and pălincă, and frequently confused with them.
